Counterflow Scrubber for Pollution Control

Recently, the team at JEPWA completed a project for the Perth Mint.

A cornerstone of Perth, and a monument of history, Perth Mint has been producing the highest and purest gold, along with silver bullion for over a century. Gold Corporation, trading as Perth Mint has also been trusted to create some of the finest coins and bars ever minted.

Our team at Johndec was engaged to create a custom solution to manufacture and supply a new fume scrubber, extraction fans and ductwork. This would in effect, replace their existing aged system.

What is a  fume scrubber?

Fume scrubbers, particularly the ones manufactured by Johndec Engineering Plastics WA, are individually designed to remove mist, entrained liquid particles, noxious corrosive gases and vapours from the exhaust air stream. A packed bed using Johndec Scrubber Packers is the heart of the scrubber. Pollutant gases can generally be removed to any desired concentration to meet local air pollution regulations.

Why did Perth Mint need a fume scrubber?

There was a need to remove and neutralise the harmful substances emitted. Once a fume scrubber is turned on, technology immediately goes to work removing a majority of impurities, dangerous airborne contaminants, gases, vapours and mist from the atmosphere. The air will be clean, fresh, and purified. Finally, the purified air leaves the scrubber at the top or rear without ammonia, and without the majority of odours and dust particles.

Why did Perth Mint need extraction fans?

The fans were needed to handle the heavy corrosive fumes, vapours, contaminated air and aggressive gases emitted by the production of gold and silver.

Why did Perth Mint need ductwork?

To improve the ventilation and to conform with AS2243.8. Ducts and fittings are produced in a large array of sizes with dimensions ranging from 75 to 1000mm in diameter.

What was the scope of works?

We installed a new Johndec Counterflow Fume Scrubber. This was specifically designed to treat contaminated airflows up to 30,600m3/hr. It was fitted with duty/standby recirculation pumps and a built-in water treatment system. The system comes with custom fabricated polypropylene duct and fittings to complete the installation.

It is no secret that a proper counterflow scrubber is imperative for pollution control. It is an essential element of any area that deals with hazardous substances.
